Swine flu was prevalent during the summer and autumn of 2009. It is possible that this virus will continue to cause problems for some vulnerable people for some time.
Vaccinations for at risk groups are available through your own GP. If you are pregnant or have an underlying health problem, please take up the opportunity to get free protection from swine flu. It is particularly important that children with neurological conditions are protected as they have been badly affected by this virus.
Vaccination was offered to all children aged 6 months to five years in early 2010. Health and social care staff were also offered this protection, so that they don't catch swine flu and pass it on to the people they care for.
For the latest national news on the vaccination programme see the Department of Health website
With the decrease in the numbers of cases, it was decided to end the National Pandemic Flu Service that was set up to support the distribution of anti-viral medications (Tamiflu and Relenza) to large numbers of patients.
People with severe flu symptoms, and those who have flu and have an underlying health condition, should contact their own GP by phone. If anti-virals are required the GP will issue a voucher. Please check with the GP which local pharmacies are issuing anti-virals. Stocks are not held at all pharmacies.

“The most important way the public can help limit to spread of any infection – including flu viruses – is to follow basic hygiene rules. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then dispose of the tissue, and wash your hands regularly.
“If you are suffering from symptoms which could be flu, don’t go to your doctor or to an A and E department. You will risk spreading the virus to others. Stay at home and seek medical advice by phone.”
