Improving working lives

Supporting staff to improve their working life

What is improving working lives (IWL)?

The IWL initiative was developed nationally through consultation with the NHS, unions and staff representatives. Every NHS organisation has introduced IWL in seven key areas.

The aim of IWL is to offer staff a better deal in their working lives. It will help everyone to strike a better balance between their work and home life, work more flexibly, develop and enjoy work more.

NHS Bolton achieved "Practice Plus", the highest level in IWL, but has continued to use the principles of IWL to support its staff.  For more about progress so far and what this means for staff, click here.

Seven key areas for IWL:

        Human resources strategy and management
        Equality and diversity
        Staff involvement and communication
        Flexible Working
        Healthy Workplace
        Learning and Development
Flexible Retirement, Child Care & Carers Support
