Sustainable development and environmental issues

As an employer of more than one million people and a major purchaser and consumer of energy and resources, the NHS has the potential to make a significant contribution to sustainable environmental, social and economic development, and harvest many benefits.

By making more sustainable choices within NHS Bolton, we will enable services to run more efficiently, improve public health, enhance the local environment and even reduce the demand on our services.

This can be achieved by a combination of:

• improved working practices

• greater staff and organisational awareness

• on-going commitment to the pursuance of technical improvements.

NHS Bolton therefore acknowledges that we have a responsibility to consider the implications of all of our management and clinical functions with respect to sustainability and the environment and to support policies and practices that will provide a responsible approach to environmental and substainable management.

To ensure our compliance with the above, NHS Bolton has a Sustainable Development and Environment Working Group who discuss and produce reports on matters regarding sustainable development.

The group has representatives from most departments within the PCT and from the Local Authority. The group meets quarterly. The agenda and minutes and from the meetings can be found below. If you would like more information on the group please contact Alf Barker, Environmental Health Improvement Specialist, in the Public Health department on 01204 462164 or email alf.barker@bolton.nhs.uk
