Equality Impact Assessments (EIA’s) are a legal requirement under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, Disability Discrimination Act 2005, and the Equality Act 2006.
They are a key requirement of the Healthcare Commission and NHS Litigation Authority. In line with the legislation, the PCT is required, to undertake an EIA on all its actives which means any new or revised policies, procedures, projects, strategies or services.
However, NHS Bolton’s approach goes beyond the legal requirement and also looks at issue relating to age, sexual orientation, transgender or transsexual people, religion and belief, carers and those with dependent and social class or economic status.
An EIA is a mechanism that supports managers to analyse a policy or project in relation to its impact on various groups of people within our community.
The aim of the assessment is the promotion of equality of opportunity and should lead to actions and improvements to policies or services etc.
