Cooking course serves up a treat

February 23, 2011

People in Bolton are being offered courses to help them be more of a whizz in the kitchen.

The Cook4Life courses, which are set up by NHS Bolton as part of the national Change4life scheme, aim to provide people with the skills needed to cook healthy and balanced meals on a budget for their families.

Recent courses have been useful for people who want to learn extra skills, such as making quick and easy meals to suit busy lifestyles and how to get fussy kids to eat healthier food.

Angela Pulford, a 32-year-old mother-of-four from Brownlow Fold, said: “The course has given me new ideas for cooking healthy food on a budget.

“Before the course, I used to go for whatever was convenient, now I get the kids involved and we have fun together making such things as homemade pizzas with healthy toppings.”

Ian Bleakley, 66, from Brownlow Fold, said: “This is the first time I’ve been on a cookery course. It’s normally my wife who does the cooking but now I can help out a lot more.

“The course has steered me away from more fatty foods and I’m definitely eating more healthily.”

The next round of courses begin next week and last for seven weeks in total.

Being held at Brownlow Fold Community Centre, on Eskrick St, and the other at New Bury Community Learning Centre, Buckley Lane, Farnworth.

Registration costs £4 for the first session with each following session costing £2. The student cooks also get to take home the food they’ve cooked.
