The holiday period is a time when people often become unwell, generally with minor illnesses that can be treated at home. It is a good idea to think now about where to receive the right treatment if you become unwell. In many cases illnesses and ailments can be solved with over the counter medicines sold in your local pharmacies.

Pharmacy

Pharmacies are more than just places to pick up prescriptions. Your pharmacy can give you help and advice on many common health problems.

Pharmacists are highly qualified professionals with vast medical knowledge, but they are often underused by patients. They could prevent you having to seek further medical attention. It is worth asking your pharmacist what medication to keep at home, so that you are stocked up if you fall ill this winter. Your pharmacist will be pleased to help you with this, or with any other enquiries you may have.

Doctors

Some people may find that their symptoms do persist and don’t get any better after two or three days. In this case you should contact your local GP practice. Your GP practice will have your medical record to hand and a GP or practice nurse will be able to give you further advice and treatment. Sometimes this can be done over the phone, without the need to make an appointment.

GP practices will be open or closed at the following times this winter:

·         Open as usual: 23 December 2011

·         Closed: 24 December 2011 - 27 December 2011

·         Open as usual: 28 December 2011 - 30 December 2011

·         Closed: 31 December 2011 - 02 January 2012

If you require a doctor at the weekend, in the evening or when your doctors is closed contact the GP out of hours. To do this ring your GP practice and you will be directed to the GP out of hours service.
