Children's Weight Management Team (CWMT)

Who we are

The CWMT is a team of professionals working together to help children, young people and their families to manage their weight. 

The team works in partnership with families to address the key disciplines that link weight management, including food and nutrition, physical activity, behaviour change, and self esteem. The team aims to help children and young people achieve and maintain a healthier weight, while learning to make better lifestyle choices, in order to improve long-term health.

What is on offer?

The service offers a variety of treatment programmes depending on age and suitabilty.  Everyone referred to the service recieves an initial consultation to find the best programme to suit their needs .

MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!) programme

A group programme for seven to 13-year-olds and their families. The programme runs twice a week during 10 weeks and includes activity sessions, as well as nutrition and behaviour change sessions. At least one parent or carer must attend. Sessions last between one and two hours, and we plan to hold at least four programmes per year at various venues across Bolton.

Ur Rite W8

An interactive, individually tailored programme to help children and young people become fitter, healthier and happier. The programme consists of individual appointments and is for children and young people up to 17 years old (19 if learning disabilities). Appointments are available at various locations across Bolton. For more details, contact 01204 462694.

Positive Moves - activity group programme

A  weekly group-based activity programme for young people aged 13 to 17. Every Thursday evening, 4pm to 5pm, at Bolton Arena and every Wednesday evening, 5pm-6pm, at St James's Secondary School.

Cook4Life Young People

Coming soon: Group cooking sessions for young people to learn the practical side of eating a healthier diet. Sessions will include how to adapt their favourite meals into healthier versions.

Cook4Life Parents

Weekly group cooking sessions for parents to enable them to feel more confident in cooking healthy, nutritionally balanced meals for their family. Takes place every Wednesday, 1.15pm to 2.45pm, at New Bury Community Learning Centre, Farnworth.

Training programme

In conjuction with the food and health team, we offer an annual training programme on a range of food and health topics, including children's weight management, such as raising the issue of weight with families and first line management of child obesity. How do you refer?

The team welcomes referrals from doctors, nurses and other people working with children, young people and their families. For a referral form, please click here.


The team is working with children and young people aged up to 17 years old (19 if learning disabilities) who have a body mass index (BMI) greater than the 91st centile. The team will also accept telephone enquiries direct from parents or young people (over 13 years) who have a concern about their weight.
