Services We Provide

Audiovestibular Medicine - Adult Service

Who we are

Audiovestibular Medicine is the medical specialty concerned with the investigation, diagnosis and management of balance disorders and hearing disorders, including tinnitus and auditory processing difficulties.

It is predominantly an out-patient-based service and delivered by a multidisciplinary team with close links to other medical specialties (especially Neurology, Falls Service, Cardiology, Genetics, ENT, Radiology and Elderly Care).

How the Team works

The staff consists of 2 Consultants in Audiovestibular Medicine (Dr Dolores Umapathy and Dr Veronica Kennedy), a Specialist Registrar, a Neuro-vestibular Physiotherapist (Gillian Lomas) and Audiologists.

We work closely with the Adult Audiology Department at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

What do we offer?

We take a holistic approach to balance problems with the focus on inner ear disorders. This includes a detailed history and relevant general, balance and neurological assessments. Our service also included specialised vestibular rehabilitation with the Neuro-vestibular Physiotherapist which is undertaken in the community setting.

We also assess tinnitus and hearing disorders, looking at the impact of these on the individual.

We investigate the causes of these disorders in depth and arrange a tailored management plan to address the individual needs of the person.

We liaise with the Adult Audiology Service at the Royal Bolton Hospital to arrange appropriate hearing aids when indicated.  Where there are interacting medical problems, we liaise with the relevant departments.

Support to Professionals

We provide training for medical professionals (GPs, consultant colleagues, trainee doctors - both hospital and GP - and medical students) and paramedical professionals with an interest in hearing and balance disorders.

How to access the service

The service accepts referrals from medical professionals including GPs, Hospital and Community Consultants as well as referrals from within the multidisciplinary team (Neuro-vestibular Physiotherapist, Audiologist).

A written referral is required via letter or Choose and Book.
