Musculoskeletal (MSK) Therapy
Who we are
We are a team of therapists, including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Podiatrists specialising in biomechanics (assessment for and the provision of orthotic insoles).
Clinical leadership and supervsion is provided by a named Advanced Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Practitioner with a Consultant Physiotherapist overseeing the clinical governance framework. A designated MSK therapy team leader provides day-to-day operational management.
How the team works
The overall aim of our service is
-
To provide rapidly accessible community based therapy for people with a musculoskeletal (muscle / bone) condition.
-
To provide specialist therapy assessment and clinical management of patients with a musculoskeletal condition and to support patients with self-management strategies and lifestyle changes, to prevent avoidable musculoskeletal disease and to manage longer term musculoskeletal conditions, working to the principles of:
-
No needless pain
-
No needless loss of mobility and function
-
No needless unemployment
-
To focus on the patient, providing therapy to meet individual needs, managing a patient’s health and well-being within a community (care closer to home) setting and minimising any avoidable GP consultations or avoidable attendances at A&E.
What do we offer?
MSK therapists are experts in movement and mobility and deal with problems of stiffness, weakness, posture and gait. We deal with the fear and pain of of moving and the lack of motivation and physcial inability to move.
Referred patients are assessed and a treatment package is agreed with each patient which is delivered according to needs. The basis of the majority of treatment packages is exercise and each patient will receive instruction on relevant exercise and activity that they can undertake themselves, to assist with recovery and longer term managament of their condition.
Therapy is aimed at restoring, maintaining and improving people’s function & movement and thereby maximising the quality of their lives. It is delivered either on an individual basis or can be delivered through group activity such as back rehabilitation groups, hydrotherapy (exercise in water) and knee groups.
Support to Professionals
The team offers support to other Health Care Professionals by providing expert opinion and advice.
