We are a small team of screeners/graders, health care assistants and administrators working with known diabetic patients offering annual screening for eye and feet complications; serious conditions that unknown to the patients can occur in your eyes and feet as a result of your diabetes. If left untreated they can lead to blindness and limb amputation.
Our aim is to screen 100% of the diabetic population over the age of 12 years; identifying changes to your retina (back of the eye) and problems that you may have with your feet. If we identify these we will refer you on to the hospital for further assessment of your eyes and to the podiatry team for any foot complications.
Our screener/graders are accredited once they have completed the level 3 City and Guilds certificate in Diabetic Retinopathy.
Some patients are unsuitable for the type of digital camera screening that our team offers, these patients will be offered screening in the hospital assessment clinic at the Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The diabetes screening team also offers support and training for healthcare professionals who work with diabetic patients. Staff are invited to attend clinics to observe the processes involved with the combined and foot screening offered to patients in the clinics.
Patients are encouraged to attend other services like the education meetings which can offer them advice on how to care for their diabetes better.
Patients are identified to the screening service from GP practices. We send a letter to patients informing them of the outcome of their screening visit and a copy is also sent to their GP.
Patients are welcome to ring the booking office with general enquiries regarding their appointment or outcomes of their screening if they have any concerns. We will offer an appointment that suits you in a place that is convenient and at a time that allows flexibility around your lifestyle.
Patients are offered appointments in various centres around
